Aging buildings completed more than 30 years ago to receive focused scrutiny

Joint inspection teams to deploy specialized equipment with private-sector experts

Seoul's Jung-gu district announced Thursday that it will conduct its "2026 Intensive Safety Inspection" covering 89 facilities through June 19. The campaign is aimed at preventing disasters and safety accidents ahead of the approaching summer season and in the wake of recent large-scale incidents.

The primary inspection targets include traditional markets and large retail stores (26 sites), apartment complexes and general buildings (15 sites), tourism accommodation facilities and karaoke establishments (12 sites), mechanical parking structures (8 sites), and performance venues and museums (7 sites). Particular attention will be paid to high-risk facilities, including buildings completed more than 30 years ago and venues with high public foot traffic.

Joint inspection teams will be formed with civil servants responsible for each facility alongside private-sector specialists in architecture, fire safety, electrical systems and gas — all drawn from the district's Safety Management Advisory Council. The teams will carry out detailed inspections using specialized equipment.
