Democratic Party of Korea candidates won all five Gwangju district mayor races in the 9th National Simultaneous Local Elections on Thursday.

Two of the five — Kim Yi-gang of Seo-gu and Kim Byeong-nae of Nam-gu — were elected unopposed.

In the contested races, Im Taek of Dong-gu received 54.42 percent of the vote, Shin Su-jeong of Buk-gu received 77.82 percent, and Park Byeong-gyu of Gwangsan-gu received 80.94 percent.

In Dong-gu, Im secured a third consecutive term, defeating Rebuilding Korea Party candidate Kim Sung-hwan by roughly 9 percentage points.

In Buk-gu, where four candidates competed, Shin dominated the field. Park in Gwangsan-gu won by a wide margin against a Progressive Party candidate.

The opposition fielded candidates from only two parties — the Rebuilding Korea Party and the Progressive Party.
