US President Donald Trump has confirmed he will attend the Group of Seven summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, on June 15.

Trump announced Wednesday on his Truth Social account that he plans to travel to France for the G7 summit "immediately following the UFC World Championship fight on the South Lawn of the White House, which will be one of the most exciting nights in the history of the United States."

While a sitting US president's attendance at the G7 has long been considered standard practice, Trump's participation had drawn scrutiny given his recent friction with European allies over issues including Iran.

Trump has publicly complained on multiple occasions that key allies — including the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy — have not provided sufficient cooperation during the war with Iran.

"The records show that during the long and storied history of the White House, much lower-level fighting events have taken place," Trump said, "but the world's greatest fighters, all champions, competing at the People's House is something that has never been imagined before."

UFC Freedom 250 is scheduled for the White House South Lawn on June 14 to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. The date also falls on Trump's 80th birthday.
