KCC marks 10th Posidonia appearance, unveiling marine coatings technology in Greece

Antifouling paint leads charge against fuel costs and tightening carbon rules

Global rivals Jotun, Hempel intensify competition in high-performance coatings

Barnacles are known in the shipping industry as creatures that eat money. From the moment a vessel hits the water, the crustaceans begin clinging to the hull, increasing surface friction and driving up fuel costs. Shipowners pay willingly to keep them at bay: a single ultra-large container ship can spend tens of billions of won on fuel each year, meaning even a 10 percent improvement in fuel efficiency translates into savings worth billions of won. That calculus is why South Korea's largest paint maker, KCC, has returned for the 20th consecutive year to Posidonia, the world's biggest maritime exhibition.

KCC is participating in Posidonia 2026, held June 1–5 at the Athens Metropolitan Expo Centre in Greece, where it is presenting a lineup of high-performance marine coatings products. KCC is the only Korean paint company taking part in the biennial show. The company has attended every edition since 2006 — its 10th appearance — steadily expanding its reach among global customers in Greece, one of the world's most important shipowner markets. Posidonia, which dates to 1978, is the premier exhibition for ships and related marine equipment.

At this year's exhibition, KCC is presenting its key marine coatings lines — antifouling, anticorrosion and topcoat products. The company is particularly spotlighting two products, the EgisELF Series and MetaCruise NS, positioning them as its answer to tightening environmental regulations and growing demand for improved vessel operating efficiency.

The EgisELF Series is an antifouling paint designed to reduce frictional and hydrodynamic resistance on hull surfaces, helping ships glide through water more smoothly and cut fuel consumption. The coating is engineered to wear away at a controlled, uniform rate, maintaining its performance over time. The principle mirrors the aerodynamic tuning of a car — just as reducing air drag improves fuel economy, EgisELF keeps the hull surface smooth to minimize water resistance and boost efficiency.

MetaCruise NS is a silicone-based antifouling paint that prevents marine organisms from taking hold on the hull. Think of it, from a barnacle's perspective, as a sheet of slippery ice: the surface is engineered to make it nearly impossible for organisms to settle, keeping the hull clean. Any creature that does manage to attach is easily swept away by wave action. By reducing biofouling, the product aims to improve fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions.

KCC's willingness to absorb the considerable cost of attending Posidonia reflects the economics of marine coatings, which are far more lucrative than architectural paint. Marine coatings must be applied in multiple thick layers to perform properly — more than 10 times the thickness of paint used on apartment exteriors or residential walls. Paint serves as the hull's first line of defense against seawater, waves, salt, impact and marine organisms. As a result, the cost of coatings alone for a single ultra-large container ship or LNG carrier can exceed 1 billion won (approximately $660,000).

The need for periodic recoating is another reason KCC is doubling down on marine paints. After a vessel is coated during construction, it returns to dry dock every several years for repainting. Antifouling coatings applied to the underwater hull are particularly critical because they directly affect operating efficiency, leading shipowners to prioritize performance over price. "Even if the paint costs a bit more, if it can cut fuel consumption by just 1 to 2 percent, it's well worth the investment for a shipowner," an industry official said.

To illustrate the scale: an ultra-large container ship spends close to 300 million won a day on fuel, and at 250 operating days a year, annual fuel costs run between 60 billion and 70 billion won. Given that kind of expenditure, using better coatings to achieve even a 10 percent efficiency gain can yield savings in the billions of won per year — which is why antifouling paint is increasingly regarded as a fuel-saving device in its own right.

KCC is not alone in targeting this market. Norway's Jotun is pushing its SeaQuantum antifouling line alongside hull performance management solutions, emphasizing fuel savings. Denmark's Hempel is competing in the high-performance antifouling segment with silicone-based products including Hempaguard. AkzoNobel's International brand is in the race with its Intersleek silicone antifouling range. Japan's Nippon Paint Marine and CMP are also expanding product lines built around low-friction, long-duration antifouling performance.
