Convenience store chains are buzzing with promotional activity ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, slashing prices by up to half on chicken, pizza, beer and other game-watching favorites.
GS Retail is running World Cup promotions across all its channels, including its convenience store, supermarket and home shopping arms, according to industry sources Sunday.
GS25 is offering up to 50 percent off and buy-one-get-one deals on chicken, pizza, beer and snacks throughout June. Customers paying with Kookmin or Shinhan cards can pick up six cans of popular beers — including Daisy Lager — for 12,000 won (about $8).
The GS25 Hongdae Red Road branch, popular with customers in their 20s and 30s, has been redecorated inside and out to create a festival atmosphere through July 19. An offline cheering event is also planned for June 11.
GS Retail's supermarket chain GS The Fresh and home shopping arm GS Shop will also hold events, including time-limited deals and giveaways of chicken gift vouchers.
Seven-Eleven is running discount and giveaway promotions on ready-to-eat chicken and pizza targeting "home viewers" — customers who watch matches at home — in line with its June soccer events.
Eleven varieties of ready-to-eat chicken are discounted by up to 4,000 won, while ready-to-eat pizza purchases come with a free cola. Some pizza-by-the-slice items are also available on a buy-one-get-one basis.
Seven-Eleven's ready-to-eat chicken sales rose 15 percent year-on-year through May 29, while sales through its app's same-day pickup service jumped roughly sevenfold over the same period last year.
"Demand for ready-to-eat foods like chicken and pizza is expected to rise sharply as the international soccer schedule coincides with the early summer season," said Shim Seung-wook, a chicken merchandise manager on Seven-Eleven's ready-to-eat food team.
CU is targeting soccer fans and summer demand with a beer promotion themed around "prices from 10 years ago." Domestic brands Hanmac and Kelly are priced at 16,000 won (about $11) for eight cans, bringing the per-can price down to around 2,000 won.
A six-pack bundle of Asahi — the top-selling imported beer at CU — is available for 12,900 won (about $9), while four-can bundles of popular imports including Stella, Heineken and Hoegaarden are priced at 10,000 won (about $7). Customers paying with Naver Pay money or points receive an additional 2,000 won off any of the 17 beer bundle varieties, and buying seafood snacks alongside them brings discounts of up to 3,000 won.
Jim Beam Highball Peach — sold exclusively at CU — is available at four cans for 9,000 won, a discount of more than 40 percent off the regular price. A selection of premium highballs, including two varieties of Absolut fresh-fruit highball, an aespa lemonade highball, and Peace Minus One black and red highballs, are priced at 12,000 won (about $8) for any three cans.
