Safety and repair courses draw 96% satisfaction or higher, confirming program effectiveness; curriculum covers everything from beginner riding to hands-on maintenance
Songpa-gu in Seoul has been consistently running bicycle education programs for residents, building a foundation for cycling as an everyday mode of transportation.
Every session has filled up on a first-come, first-served basis, establishing the program as a demand-driven fixture in the district.
Last year, all participants in the bicycle safety course reported satisfaction, while approximately 96 percent of those who attended the repair workshop said they were satisfied — results that confirm the program's effectiveness and point to sustained demand for bicycle education.
This year, the district is again offering two separate resident programs — a bicycle safety course and a bicycle repair workshop — to promote cycling and spread a culture of road safety. Running riding and maintenance education as distinct tracks allows the program to cover the full range of bicycle use and upkeep.
The safety course targets beginners and combines classroom instruction on traffic laws and riding techniques with outdoor practice. Sessions cover safety gear, brake operation and hands-on riding experience. Each course runs two hours a day over three days, with three rounds held from late April through mid-May. Classes take place at the Songpa Safety Experience Education Center and are capped at 12 participants per session.
The repair workshop is designed to help residents handle common breakdowns on their own. Participants learn bicycle mechanics and tool use, then practice basic maintenance — puncture repair, brake and gear adjustment, and fixing a dropped chain. Each 80-minute session accommodates just three participants for close, hands-on instruction. Five sessions are scheduled throughout May at the Bicycle Repair Experience Center, with additional rounds planned for the second half of the year.
Residents can register through the Songpa Learn website by searching "bicycle" and selecting their preferred course. Detailed schedules and course descriptions are available on the site, and spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Beyond these programs, the district also runs an outreach bicycle safety course for daycare centers and kindergartens, and offers electric scooter safety education for middle and high school students.
