The hall of fame recognizes 147 recipients of the Geumcheon Citizens Award, from the first ceremony in 1996 through this year's 31st, with new honorees to be added annually
Geumcheon-gu has established a hall of fame for recipients of the Geumcheon Citizens Award in the first-floor lobby of the district office.
The hall of fame was created to honor the "unsung heroes" of the community — past recipients of the Geumcheon Citizens Award who have quietly dedicated themselves to the betterment of the district.
A total of 147 recipients are now listed, spanning the inaugural ceremony in 1996 through the 31st ceremony this year. Each honoree's name, year of recognition and award category are engraved on a nameplate, commemorating their contributions to the local community and expressing the district's gratitude.
The hall of fame was designed in colors that complement the district office's interior, while the mounted nameplates add a sense of gravity and distinction to the space.
The district said it will continue to select Geumcheon Citizens Award recipients each year, identifying individuals who bring warmth to the community and adding them to the hall of fame.
The Geumcheon Citizens Award is presented to residents or organizations that have contributed to the community across four categories: community service, civic virtue, culture and sports education, and a special category.
This year's community service recipients include Kim Jae-woo, who has run a vegetable stall for 14 years and sets aside the proceeds from the first and last customer of each day to host an annual meal for marginalized neighbors. Kim Chang-nam, who operates a supermarket, has sustained a giving and sponsorship campaign for those in need since 2013, including active support for events such as the Hope Ondol Warm Winter program. So Myeong-su has carried on annual activities for vulnerable groups, including a pickled cucumber sharing event and a laundry service for elderly people living alone.
In the special category, Oh Hae-hyeon served as chair of a residential block redevelopment association, mediating competing interests among residents. Working with relevant authorities, Oh helped cut the project approval period by six months, contributing to the revitalization of the redevelopment initiative.
Geumcheon-gu District Mayor Choi Gi-chan said the hall of fame was established "to honor and pay tribute to those who have dedicated themselves to Geumcheon." Choi added, "I extend my deepest gratitude to all those listed, and we will continue to seek out Geumcheon's unsung heroes to enshrine in the hall of fame."
