Philip Morris Korea announced Wednesday that its Yangsan factory in South Gyeongsang Province has received a minister's commendation from the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy in the "renewable energy industry development" category, in recognition of its contributions to climate change response and building a sustainable manufacturing environment.
The award was presented at the 2026 Renewable Energy Day ceremony held at COEX in Seoul on Oct. 23. The Yangsan factory has consistently expanded its use of renewable energy in line with its RE100 implementation plan. It began procuring renewable energy in earnest in 2024 and completed the transition to 100 percent renewable electricity last year. The Korea Energy Agency has issued the factory a certificate confirming its renewable energy use.
The factory has also continued upgrading its equipment to improve energy efficiency on the manufacturing floor, including recovering and reusing waste heat generated by chilled-water production systems to reduce overall energy consumption. Since 2023, it has operated an eco-friendly carbon-reduction demonstration facility using microalgae, developed in partnership with the Korea Environment Corporation and others. The factory is also working to strengthen water resource management based on Alliance for Water Stewardship certification.
"This award is the fruit of the Yangsan factory's consistent efforts to transition to renewable energy and build a sustainable manufacturing environment," Yangsan Factory Manager Haroon Basher said. "We will continue to drive meaningful environmental improvements on the manufacturing floor and contribute to carbon neutrality and the spread of renewable energy."
