Expanding economic cooperation to further strengthen the South Korea-US alliance

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Lee Hyung-il said Monday that the South Korea-US alliance, which has developed over more than 70 years, "is deepening beyond security into economic areas such as advanced industries, energy and supply chains."

Lee made the remarks after meeting with Michelle Park Steel, the US ambassador to South Korea, at Government Complex Seoul to exchange views on the direction of bilateral economic cooperation.

Lee congratulated Steel on taking up the post and said Steel — born in Seoul with a deep understanding of both countries — is expected to serve as a strong bridge for bilateral economic cooperation.

The two sides also exchanged views on key issues including strategic investment and trade between the two countries. Lee stressed the importance of close communication going forward and called on the US Embassy to play an active role.

Both sides also emphasized the need to further expand economic cooperation to continuously strengthen the alliance, the Ministry of Economy and Finance said.
