Yeungnam University of Science and Technology held a disability awareness education session for about 200 faculty and staff members Thursday at the audiovisual room on the second floor of Cheonma Square.
Korea Parut House, affiliated with the Korea Employment Agency for Persons with Disabilities, participated in the session and staged a performance aimed at raising disability awareness. Through the performance, faculty and staff reflected on the lives of people with disabilities and the social prejudices they face, reaffirming the importance of respecting individual differences and cultivating disability sensitivity.
The session covered topics including understanding different types of disabilities, protecting the rights of people with disabilities, prohibiting discrimination, ensuring reasonable accommodations, and laws and systems related to employment promotion and vocational rehabilitation for people with disabilities. Participants also shared practical knowledge on fostering genuine awareness, including respecting the autonomy and independence of people with disabilities and improving access to assistive devices and facilities.
The university's Support Center for Students with Disabilities said the session aimed to foster a work environment where all members are treated with equal respect regardless of disability status, and to help spread a culture of consideration and mutual respect across campus.
Mo Mun-hui, director of the Support Center for Students with Disabilities, said the session was designed so that faculty and staff could develop empathy naturally through the arts, rather than simply gaining intellectual knowledge about disability. "We hope the empathy shared through the performance will help reduce prejudice toward disability and translate into an attitude of mutual respect," Mo said.
