'Busan Future Marine Industry Research Group' kicks off policy study
Research to analyze maritime capital policies and propose economic revitalization measures
The Busan City Council's lawmaker research group, the Busan Future Marine Industry Research Group, held a kickoff briefing Wednesday at the council's lawmaker hall for a policy research project titled "Future Marine Policy and Marine Economy Revitalization Strategies for Realizing Busan as a Maritime Capital."
The research aims to analyze the current state of Busan's maritime capital policies and projects, and to identify priority policy tasks and system improvement measures for boosting the marine economy, drawing on domestic and international case studies of coastal cities and expert input. The study will organize policies covering the marine industry, port and logistics, marine tourism and culture, marine spatial planning, and talent development under a common framework, and examine the linkage between related projects and their implementing agencies.
The briefing was attended by lawmakers affiliated with the research group, officials from the city's maritime capital policy division, and research staff. Oh U-jin, chief executive of Haven Co., the firm conducting the research, presented the research plan, followed by a question-and-answer session.
Kim Eun-myeong, the group's lead lawmaker, said the potential of Busan as a maritime capital — viewed through the lens of connecting the sea with the city, and industry with people — must be translated into jobs for residents and vitality for the local economy. "We will identify priority tasks in marine policy and reflect the outcomes in ordinances, budgets and policy proposals to strengthen Busan's maritime competitiveness," Kim said.
The Busan Future Marine Industry Research Group is composed of seven city council members and researches ways to revitalize Busan's marine economy through expert forums, policy forums and field visits to key marine policy sites.
