Lee offers condolences to Spanish people, bereaved families; wishes speedy recovery for injured
2 Korean nationals injured on board; consular official dispatched to scene
President Lee Jae Myung expressed condolences Thursday over the high-speed train collision in Spain, saying he prays for the victims and wishes a swift recovery for the injured.
"I am deeply saddened and heartbroken to hear that the train accident in Spain has claimed many lives," Lee wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "I offer my deepest condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families and the people of Spain who are suffering great grief. I sincerely hope that the injured will recover quickly."
At least 68 people were killed when two high-speed trains collided near Urda in Toledo Province, south of Madrid, on Tuesday (local time). Ten Korean nationals were on board, two of whom were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
Lee said some Korean nationals aboard the train had sustained injuries, and extended condolences to them as well. "I hope they recover their health as soon as possible," Lee said.
Lee said the South Korean Embassy in Spain had dispatched a consular official to the scene to assess the situation and provide necessary consular assistance, including support for the injured and their transportation. "We will carefully look after our nationals to the end, making sure that the necessary support is provided with their safety as the top priority," Lee said.
Lee went on to say he sincerely hopes the damage from the accident will be addressed quickly and that the people of Spain will soon return to their daily lives.
