Incheon's Yeongjong-gu district has begun designing policies aimed at establishing itself as a "global world-class lifelong learning city."
The district held the inaugural meeting of the Yeongjong-gu Lifelong Education Council and a launch briefing for a research project on its first five-year lifelong learning development plan (2027–2031) on Tuesday at the Gongam Hall of the Yeongjong-gu Lifelong Learning Center, presided over by District Mayor Son Hwa-jeong.
The newly formed council, which held its first session that day, comprises eight members — including district lawmakers, education experts and practitioners from local lifelong education sites — with Son serving as chairperson.
The council will set the basic direction of the district's lifelong education policy and serve as an advisory and deliberative body for key projects going forward.
The launch briefing covered a five-year lifelong learning vision for 2027–2031 and a phased implementation strategy tailored to the characteristics of the newly established district and the educational needs of its 140,000 residents.
Council members put forward a range of policy ideas, including expanding lifelong learning infrastructure unique to Yeongjong, identifying education initiatives that reflect the district's identity as an airport economy hub, and strengthening learning support for marginalized groups.
The district plans to conduct resident surveys, expert consultations and interim briefings in stages, with the goal of completing the final development plan by the first half of 2027.
"The launch of the council and the research project mark a milestone in Yeongjong-gu's journey toward becoming a sustainable education city," Son said. "We will build a tailored lifelong learning ecosystem where every resident can access opportunities for learning, befitting Yeongjong's status as the capital of the airport economy."
