The names of 18 stations on Phase 1 of Gwangju Metro Line 2 — running from City Hall to World Cup Stadium, Baekun Square, Chosun University and Gwangju Station — have been finalized. The Phase 1 route is scheduled to open in December 2028.
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City officially designated the 18 station names for the Line 2 Phase 1 corridor on Wednesday.
The 18 names cover all 20 stations on the route except Sangmu Station (Station 203) and Nam-Gwangju Station (Station 214), which connect to the existing Metro Line 1 as transfer points and will retain their current names.
Station 238, the terminal point adjacent to the Line 2 Yudeok depot, has been named Yudeok.
Station 201, located near the Bank of Korea intersection in Seo-gu, will be called City Hall. Station 202 will be Chipyeong, and Station 204 will be Uncheon Reservoir.
Stations 205 through 210 have been named Geumho, Punggeum Intersection, World Cup Stadium, Pungam Lake Park, Geumdangsan Entrance and Mudeung Market, respectively.
Station 211 will be Baekun Square; Station 212, Christian Hospital Entrance; Station 213, Bangnim (Yangnim Historic Cultural Village); Station 215, Chosun University; Station 216, Court Entrance; Station 217, Sansu; Station 218, Gyodae; and Station 219, Jungheung Intersection.
The naming process incorporated input from 13,779 residents. A public survey conducted from March 2 to March 15 drew responses from 11,293 people online and 2,486 offline.
The city finalized the station names after reviewing the public survey results and obtaining approval from the place-names committee.
The Line 2 Phase 1 corridor stretches about 17 kilometers from City Hall through World Cup Stadium, Baekun Square, Nam-Gwangju Station and Chosun University to Gwangju Station, with the project targeting a December 2028 opening.
