South Chungcheong Province is pushing to establish itself as a global hub for Korea's defense industry this year through a series of initiatives spanning infrastructure development, company support and workforce training.

The province held its 2026 South Chungcheong Defense Industry Development Council meeting Wednesday at the provincial government building, with Vice Governor Hong Jong-wan, council members and related civil servants — about 30 people in total — in attendance.

The meeting proceeded in three parts: a project plan briefing by Ahn Ho-il, head of the Chungnam-Nonsan Defense Innovation Cluster project team; progress reports from eight departments, including the Future Industries Division, on this year's defense industry development plans; and a discussion on strategies to advance the sector.

The Chungnam-Nonsan Defense Innovation Cluster, selected in June through a Defense Acquisition Program Administration open call, plans to invest a total of 49.9 billion won — including 24.5 billion won ($18.5 million) in national funding — by 2030 to pursue projects specializing in AI defense robots.

This year alone, the province will channel 58.34 billion won across 28 projects, covering defense infrastructure such as the development of the Nonsan National Defense Industrial Complex and construction of a Defense Future Aviation Research Center, as well as company support and specialist training.

Participants reviewed the progress of individual projects and exchanged views on how to strengthen links between key initiatives to maximize the impact of policy implementation.

The province plans to incorporate expert opinions and departmental progress updates from the council into the finalization of this year's action plan and the drafting of next year's. It will also reinforce cooperation to ensure major defense industry policies — including the defense innovation cluster project — stay on track.

The Defense Industry Development Council is an advisory body established under Article 7 of the South Chungcheong Province Defense Industry Promotion and Support Ordinance, covering the full range of defense industry development matters including the formulation and implementation of promotion plans and the development of defense industrial complexes.

Now in its fourth term, which launched in September last year, the council comprises 18 members — four ex officio and 14 appointed — drawn from defense-related agencies and research institutions, universities, companies and the provincial assembly, including the Ministry of National Defense, the Agency for Defense Development and KIDA.

"It is important to organically link the Chungnam-Nonsan Defense Innovation Cluster project with the defense industry development action plans to strengthen the competitiveness of the region's defense sector," Vice Governor Hong said. "We will continue to deepen cooperation with defense agencies, research institutions, universities and companies to develop South Chungcheong Province into a base for the advanced defense industries of the future."
