Large OLED panel sales began in 2013
Application expands from TVs to gaming monitors
President Jeong Cheol-dong vows to build 'moat' rivals cannot cross
LG Display's White OLED (WOLED) panels have surpassed 50 million cumulative units sold.
LG Display said Wednesday the company launched the world's first large-format OLED TV panel in 2013 and has since hit a series of milestones: 10 million units in 2020, 20 million in 2021, 30 million in 2023 and 40 million in 2025, before reaching the 50 million mark 13 years after its debut.
LG Display has led the full-size OLED TV market by advancing screen size, picture quality and performance — mass-producing the world's first 55-inch OLED TV panel in 2013, the world's first 88-inch 8K OLED TV panel in 2018 and the world's largest 97-inch OLED TV panel in 2022.
Growth in the large OLED market gained momentum as the technology expanded beyond TVs into monitors.
Building on WOLED's fast response times, LG Display introduced high-refresh-rate panels optimized for gaming, along with its proprietary DFR (Dynamic Frequency & Resolution) technology, which allows users to freely switch between refresh rates and resolutions depending on the content.
The company is also accelerating growth in WOLED-based gaming monitors with a lineup spanning a range of sizes, from a 45-inch 21:9 monitor to a 24.5-inch esports display.
LG Display plans to expand WOLED's reach into office and professional-use applications. To that end, the company will introduce differentiated products optimized for diverse customer environments and needs, broadening the overall OLED market.
"Surpassing 50 million WOLED units is the result of our employees' efforts to overcome a difficult business environment and numerous challenges," LG Display President Jeong Cheol-dong said. "Building on 13 years of accumulated WOLED technology, we will quickly secure next-generation differentiated display technologies and build a technological and business 'moat' that competitors cannot challenge."
