Dongdaemun-gu signed a memorandum of understanding Tuesday with the 7th District of the Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul to support the successful hosting of the 2027 Seoul World Youth Day. The signing took place at 10 a.m. in the district mayor's reception room at the district office.

Attending the ceremony were Father Choi Su-ho Gregorio, head of the 7th District of the Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul and a delegate of the World Youth Day organizing committee, along with Deputy District Head Father Lee Sang-hyang Apostle John, Father Lee Jun-ho Michael, pastor of Imun-dong Cathedral, and Father Kim Yun-sang Francisco, pastor of Jangan-dong Cathedral.

The MOU aims to establish a framework of mutual cooperation between Dongdaemun-gu and the 7th District of the Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul to ensure the event is held successfully and safely.

World Youth Day is an international gathering where Catholic youth from around the world share their faith and culture. The 2027 edition is scheduled to run from July 29 to Aug. 8 across Seoul and regional dioceses. With large numbers of young pilgrims expected from around the globe, community cooperation is essential to smooth operations and participant welfare.

Under the agreement, the two parties will cooperate on administrative support for the event's operations, information sharing and promotion, use of local human and material resources, and support to improve participant convenience. They plan to communicate closely throughout the preparation process and jointly explore ways to engage the broader community.

"World Youth Day is a meaningful event where young people from around the world gather in one place to share their faith and exchange experiences and values," Dongdaemun-gu District Mayor Choi Dong-min said. "We will work closely with the 7th District of the Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul to welcome young visitors from around the world safely and do our utmost to provide the support and preparation needed for a successful event."
