Partnership with Gyeongsang National University research team includes regular water quality monitoring
BAT Korea Manufacturing announced Monday that it has completed a well restoration project in Singi Village, Sacheon.
The project was carried out in collaboration with a research team led by Professor Lim Seung-ju of the Department of Environmental Engineering at Gyeongsang National University. It is part of the company's efforts to maintain its Platinum certification — the highest rating awarded by the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) — and aims to protect an "important water resource area" (IWRA) while improving community access to water.
The Singi Village well served as the primary drinking water source for residents for about 400 years, but fell out of use after a municipal water supply was introduced. Aging infrastructure and deteriorating water quality eventually rendered it unfit for drinking. The BAT Sacheon factory launched the restoration project earlier this year, undertaking repairs to the well and water quality improvement work. After test operations and regular water quality analysis, the well's water was brought up to potable standards. The restored well will serve as a source of everyday water for residents and as a backup water supply in emergencies such as droughts.
The BAT Sacheon factory and the Gyeongsang National University research team plan to continue regular water quality monitoring after the project's completion and to work with the community to establish a well management plan. "We will continue to pursue responsible water resource management and community cooperation in line with AWS international standards," said Kim Ji-hyung, plant manager of the BAT Sacheon factory.
The BAT Sacheon factory obtained AWS Platinum certification in December last year and has maintained it through ongoing water resource management and community collaboration.
