The Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency will strengthen patrols and launch an anti-scalping enforcement and awareness campaign around Daegu Samsung Lions Park starting Sunday, as the professional baseball postseason gets underway at the stadium.
The initiative is aimed at stamping out illegal ticket scalping that exploits the fervor of autumn baseball and fostering a healthy fan culture, the agency said Friday.
On Monday, Daegu police will conduct a joint crackdown and public awareness drive with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Baseball Organization.
"We will deploy plainclothes officers and joint patrol teams around ticket booths, subway exits and major pedestrian routes before and after games to intensively crack down on organized scalping and touting," a Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency official said.
Until now, those caught scalping faced only a minor-offense fine of 160,000 won ($121) under the Minor Offense Act. However, an amendment to the National Sports Promotion Act that took effect Aug. 28 means anyone who habitually or commercially sells or brokers tickets above face value can now face up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won.
