Mapo-gu District Mayor Yoo Dong-kyun joined residents Friday afternoon at Jungdong Linear Forest for a commemorative tree-planting ceremony under the district's "one household, one tree" initiative, marking family milestones together through planting.
About 100 people from 50 households took part in the event, which is part of the district's broader "Plant 5 Million Trees Again" campaign to expand green spaces in residential areas. Each participating family chose a single tree to represent a special moment — a birth, school enrollment, graduation, marriage or promotion.
District Mayor Yoo spoke to residents about the memories and stories behind their chosen trees, expressing hope that those moments would be cherished for years to come. The group then took commemorative photos before moving to the planting sites.
Guided by community garden volunteers, Yoo and residents planted plum, Korean maple, Yoshino cherry, dogwood, cornelian cherry, rugosa rose and fringe trees across seven zones. Each tree was tagged with a nameplate bearing the planter's name and the story behind their choice.
"When we launched the tree-planting initiative during my seventh elected term, we were ahead of the curve in putting ESG principles into practice, and the moments I shared planting trees with residents then remain fond memories," Yoo said. "Now that we have kicked off the 'Plant 5 Million Trees Again' campaign with a formal declaration, we will keep delivering governance that residents can feel the benefits of in their everyday lives."
