Observations logged on citizen-science platform Naturing
New information boards installed; festival booth planned for November
Hyundai Elevator said Friday that its employees carried out wildlife observation, documentation and environmental cleanup activities at Binae Island in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province.
Participants used Naturing, a citizen-science platform, to observe and record species living on the island. After receiving education on Binae Island's ecology and biodiversity, they went into the field to photograph wildlife and log each observation — noting the time, location and habitat type — before uploading the records to the platform. They also conducted a cleanup of the surrounding area.
Binae Island is a naturally formed river island along the South Han River in Angseong-myeon, Chungju. It is home to 865 species of wild flora and fauna, including 18 endangered species, and was designated a wetland protection zone in November 2021. The protected area, including surrounding waterways, covers 920,484 square meters.
Hyundai Elevator also replaced information boards on the island that provide ecological details to visitors. The new boards include information on the wetland protection zone designation and key resident species such as the scaly-sided merganser, river otter and whooper swan. On Nov. 7, the company plans to set up a promotional booth at the Binae Island festival and distribute eco-bags of its own design to visitors.
In December 2024, Hyundai Elevator signed an MOU with Chungju city and the Wonju Regional Office of the Environment to promote environmental conservation and biodiversity at Binae Island. In June last year, about 30 employees removed invasive plant species and collected waste on the island, and that same month conducted an operation to eradicate non-native fish species — including bass and bluegill — in Lake Chungju.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Elevator was named a "good company" for disability employment at the 2026 Chungju Job Fair for People with Disabilities, held this month. The designation is awarded annually by the North Chungcheong Province Comprehensive Welfare Center for the Disabled to companies that have contributed to hiring people with disabilities, creating jobs and increasing their income.
The company received high marks for treating disability employment as a core value of its sustainable management and consistently translating that commitment into actual job creation. Hyundai Elevator's disability employment rate stands at 3.6 percent, exceeding the legally mandated rate for private companies with 50 or more employees.
