Special founding stage of Seoul's first district-level Korean orchestra draws 1,500 to Maru Park recording; nine acts perform, including Kim Yong-woo, Park Ae-ri and the National Korean Music High School
Gangnam-gu will broadcast a special founding performance by the Gangnam Korean Orchestra on KBS1TV's "Gugak Hanmadang" on Saturday at 12:10 p.m. The recording, held Oct. 3 at Maru Park in Gaepo-dong, drew more than 1,500 people and was met with an enthusiastic response.
The performance was organized to introduce the Gangnam Korean Orchestra to the public and make traditional Korean music more accessible. Founded on May 19, the ensemble is the first Korean orchestra established by a Seoul autonomous district, and the broadcast marks the beginning of its full-scale activities. The orchestra opened the show with "Sinbaennori," composed by Artistic Director Won Il, along with three other pieces.
Nine acts took part in the performance alongside the Gangnam Korean Orchestra, including Kim Yong-woo, Park Ae-ri and the National Korean Music High School. Celebrated masters of traditional music, young performers and high school students shared the stage, offering audiences a program that spanned generations and genres.
The open-air setting at Maru Park drew in not only ticketed audience members but also passersby who stopped to listen, giving many their first natural encounter with Korean traditional music. The outdoor venue kept the atmosphere warm and lively throughout, demonstrating that traditional arts can find a place in everyday life.
Gangnam-gu District Mayor Kim Hyun-ki said the district was pleased to share the orchestra's founding stage with residents and television audiences nationwide. "We will continue to expand opportunities for people to enjoy traditional arts, including Korean music, in their daily lives, making Gangnam a place where culture and the arts are part of everyday living," he said.
