North Gyeongsang Province announced Wednesday that it has appointed Lee Jun-sik, formerly head of the Election, Assembly and Local Legislation Division at the Ministry of Interior and Safety, as its new planning and coordination chief.

Lee, a native of Yeongcheon, passed the seventh local civil service examination and began his public career as head of the Culture and Sports Facilities Management Office in Yecheon-gun.

He subsequently held a series of positions at the Ministry of Interior and Safety, including head of the Big Data Analysis Division, the Public Enterprise Support Division, the Lifestyle Space Policy Division and the Balanced Development Promotion Division.

The planning and coordination chief post had been vacant since a Ministry of Interior and Safety personnel reshuffle on May 6.

With Lee's appointment, provincial officials expect momentum to build on key pending issues, including administrative integration, the Daegu-North Gyeongsang new airport project and the second round of public institution relocations.

"It is deeply meaningful to return to North Gyeongsang Province, where I began my public service career," Lee said. "I will do my utmost to ensure the province's major tasks are carried out without a hitch."
