Police have launched an investigation after skeletal remains were found in a drainage channel along the Han River in Seoul's Songpa-gu, with authorities keeping open the possibility of a criminal connection.

According to the Songpa Police Station, officers received a report Tuesday morning that human bones had been found between the southern ends of Jamsil Bridge and Olympic Bridge.

Officers who responded to the scene found a skull and leg bones near a drainage channel along the Han River.

Identifying the remains has proven difficult. The bones were severely decomposed, making it hard to determine the person's age, identity or any possible link to a crime.

A police official said the investigation is ongoing.
