Local garment workers and businesses across 14 workshops contributed brand-new clothing worth about 69 million won to be distributed through the Gwangjin Welfare Foundation
Gwangjin-gu and the Seoul Gwangjin Clothing Association held a clothing donation ceremony on Oct. 13, presenting 2,098 new garments — made or held by local garment workers and businesses — to the Gwangjin Welfare Foundation for distribution to vulnerable residents.
The drive was organized to channel the skills of the local garment industry into community support. Gwangjin-gu recruited participants from among local garment workers and businesses over roughly two months, from Aug. 5 through Sept. 30.
Fourteen garment businesses spread across seven neighborhoods, centered on the Junggok-dong area, took part. The donated items span nine categories — including women's wear, children's wear and pet clothing — totaling 2,098 pieces valued at about 69 million won ($52,000). All items were inspected and cleared by the Seoul Gwangjin Clothing Association before handover.
The ceremony was attended by Seoul Gwangjin Clothing Association President Yang Seung-min, Gwangjin Welfare Foundation Secretary-General Kim Young-su, and garment workers who participated in the drive. The foundation plans to distribute the clothing to vulnerable groups through 17 social welfare organizations in the district, including facilities for the elderly and people with disabilities.
"It is especially meaningful to be able to help our neighbors using the skills we have," Yang said. "We will continue to share with the community alongside local garment workers."
Gwangjin-gu District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho thanked the garment workers for their participation and pledged to keep raising awareness of the local garment industry's value. "We will continue building a structure in which giving back circulates within the community," he said.
The Seoul Gwangjin Clothing Association, which received the 31st Gwangjin Citizen Award in the economic revitalization category this year, has long contributed to the local economy. The donation is expected to bring added warmth to the community.
