150,000 cards issued within three months of launch
Sector-specific 10% discounts drive uptake
Existing cardholders adding Alphabet Card to their wallets
Hyundai Card's proprietary Alphabet Card, launched in July, has surpassed 150,000 cumulative issuances in just three months. The card's targeted discount benefits — tailored to consumer lifestyles in categories such as beauty and travel — are credited with driving the strong uptake.
Hyundai Card announced Wednesday that cumulative issuances of the Alphabet Card had exceeded 150,000. The product offers benefits including 10% discounts concentrated in specific spending categories such as beauty, mobile payments, subscription services, dining and travel. Its defining feature is a focus on the sectors consumers use most, rather than a broad and complex rewards structure.
The card names themselves reflect each product's specialty. Standout examples include the Alphabet Card B (Beauty), designed for customers with heavy beauty-related spending, and the Alphabet Card T (Travel), built around travel perks. The lineup is structured so consumers can easily choose the benefits that match their own spending patterns.
The Alphabet Card B, in particular, offers a 10% billing discount on beauty, health and fashion purchases and a 5% discount at coffee shops, convenience stores and on public transit, for customers who spend at least 400,000 won ($301) in the previous month. Depending on monthly spending, cardholders can receive between 15,000 won and 50,000 won in discounts per month.
Demand for additional issuances among existing Hyundai Card members is also emerging. According to Hyundai Card, a growing number of holders of the general-purpose Hyundai Card M who have significant beauty-related spending are taking out the Alphabet Card B as a second card to take advantage of its discounts. The approach lets customers pair a general card with a specialized one to maximize their benefits.
Hyundai Card has also differentiated the product through design. The company developed an exclusive typeface and card packaging for the Alphabet Card line and removed its corporate identity mark from the front of the card — a deliberate move to build a distinct brand identity separate from its existing general-purpose and premium card offerings.
A cashback event on annual fees is running through Oct. 31 for new Alphabet Card members. First-time Hyundai Card applicants who sign up for an Alphabet Card and meet certain conditions will receive a full refund of their first-year annual fee.
"If Hyundai Card M and Hyundai Card ZERO represent one pillar of Hyundai Card's versatility, the Alphabet Card is another pillar specialized for each individual's lifestyle," a Hyundai Card official said. "The two product lines are creating synergies and broadening Hyundai Card's overall spectrum."
