3 million won scholarship delivered to Samcheok
Cumulative donations reach 13.5 million won since 2016
Retired employees fund contributions through voluntary collection
Retired employees of Sampyo Cement have donated scholarships to support local talent in Samcheok for 11 consecutive years.
Sampyo Cement, a flagship affiliate of Sampyo Group, announced Wednesday that its alumni association — made up of retired employees — visited Samcheok City Hall on Oct. 13 to present a hometown scholarship of 3 million won ($2,260).
The Sampyo Cement alumni association was voluntarily formed by retired employees for fellowship and mutual support. The latest scholarship was funded by members who pooled contributions out of a shared commitment to supporting local youth education.
The association's scholarship program began in 2016. It has made donations every year since, bringing the cumulative total delivered to Samcheok City through this year to 13.5 million won over 11 years.
Samcheok, where Sampyo Cement operates its facilities, is a community with which the company and its employees have long maintained close ties. The retiree-led scholarship initiative shows that those bonds with the local community have endured well beyond their working years.
"We hope this serves as a small contribution toward helping students in our region freely pursue their dreams and aspirations without financial hardship," said Kwon Jeong-ung, chairman of the Sampyo Cement alumni association. "We will continue to make every effort to be an association that breathes together with the local community and puts the spirit of giving into practice."
