The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced Tuesday that Modu Card users who have not yet updated their card information must verify by Oct. 26 that the card number currently in use matches the one registered with Modu Card to ensure uninterrupted transit fare refunds.

If the registered card number differs from the one in use, users must update it to the current card number through the Modu Card website or app.

According to the ministry's Metropolitan Area Transportation Commission, users whose registered and active card numbers do not match may experience disruptions to their transit fare refunds starting from trips taken Oct. 27.

The commission said the card numbers on file must match those of the cards actually in use for the system to accurately track usage records, following a system overhaul carried out after a supplementary budget was approved. Since June, the commission has worked with card issuers to notify users multiple times about the need to update their card information.

While many users have completed the update since June, some have yet to do so. The commission urged those users to verify and update their card information to avoid any disruption to their transit refunds. Updates can be made until midnight on Oct. 26.

Users whose registered number differs from the card they are currently using must switch to the current card number; those whose numbers already match do not need to take any action.

The Modu Card system will be unavailable for new registrations and card registration or changes from midnight to 10 a.m. on Oct. 27 due to system maintenance. The commission said it scheduled the maintenance late at night in cooperation with card issuers to minimize inconvenience, and the end time may vary depending on progress. Public transit can still be used with the Modu Card during the maintenance window, and transit fare refunds will continue to accrue normally.

"We sincerely thank the many people who have cooperated with the Modu Card information update," Metropolitan Area Transportation Commission Chairman Kim Yong-seok said. "We ask those who have not yet completed the update to do so by Oct. 26 so they can continue to enjoy their transit fare refund benefits."

Meanwhile, the average monthly refund per Modu Card user has risen to 41,300 won ($31) since the supplementary budget took effect — roughly double the 20,700 won recorded before. The number of people receiving monthly refund benefits also grew from about 2.83 million to about 3.46 million, an increase of 630,000, reflecting a significant reduction in public transit users' living costs.
