Gwangsan-gu in Gwangju officially designated a stretch of Sangmudae-ro near the Gwangju military airport site — where a Honam-region semiconductor cluster is set to be built — as an honorary road named "Semiconductor Road," the district announced Friday.

The newly named stretch runs 5,855 meters from the Songjeong 1 Bridge intersection in Woljeong-dong to the Geungnakgyo intersection in Sinchon-dong, Gwangsan-gu. The designation is intended to help attract semiconductor-related businesses to the area.

The honorary name will remain in use for five years, from Friday through Oct. 15, 2031.

Two other candidates that emerged during public consultations — "Integrated Semiconductor Road" and "Future Integrated Semiconductor Road" — were also reviewed at an address information committee meeting held Friday, but the panel settled on the simpler "Semiconductor Road."

Honorary road names are designations used for a set period, separate from official legal road names, to highlight a region's historical figures or policy significance.

Gwangju now has 10 roads carrying honorary names. Gwangsan-gu accounts for three of them: Samsung-ro (on Saam-ro), Yun Sang-won-gil (on Cheondong-gil) and Yun Sang-won Minju-ro (on Imgok-ro).
