Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, appointed Kim Seok-mo, former director of the Gangneung Solol Art Museum, as the new director of the Pohang Municipal Art Museum on Thursday.
Kim was selected through an open recruitment process that included a document review and an interview by a selection committee. His term will run for two years.
A Pohang native, Kim studied art history and philosophy at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf in Germany. He subsequently worked at the Daegu Art Museum and the Pohang Municipal Art Museum before serving as director of the Gangneung Solol Art Museum.
In his new role, Kim will oversee the museum's full range of operations — including exhibition planning, the acquisition and management of the permanent collection, and educational programming. He will also play a central role in laying the groundwork for a second art museum and its future operations.
Kim plans to expand exhibitions that reflect the identity of local art and strengthen exchanges and cooperation with regional artists and cultural institutions at home and abroad. He will also develop a range of cultural programs to make art more accessible to residents in their daily lives.
"Drawing on the experience and expertise I have built over the years, I will work to establish the Pohang Municipal Art Museum as an open cultural space that connects citizens with art," Kim said. "I will do my utmost to advance the development of local art and expand opportunities for residents to enjoy culture."
