Yongsan-gu District Mayor Kim Kyung-dae attended the opening ceremony of the 21st Yongsan District Mayor's Cup National Little League Baseball Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the baseball field inside Yongsan Children's Garden (21 Hangang-daero 38-gil), encouraging players and tournament officials alike.

About 300 people attended the ceremony, including Kim, along with players, coaches and parents. Kim expressed gratitude to officials from the Korea Little League Baseball Federation for organizing the event and offered words of encouragement to the young athletes.

The tournament runs from Thursday through Oct. 25 — 11 days in total — at the Yongsan Children's Garden baseball field and Hwaseong Dream Park, with 100 little league teams from across the country competing in a group-stage tournament format.

"The sweat you have shed in training and the experience of competing with integrity will serve as a solid foundation no matter what dream you pursue," Kim said. "Today, I hope you play freely, show off the skills you have worked so hard to build, cheer each other on and have fun. Above all, I hope you stay safe, make wonderful memories, and know that Yongsan is firmly behind your dreams and your determination."

Several alumni of the Yongsan-gu Little League club have gone on to play professionally: Park Min-woo (NC Dinos), Choi Won-tae (Samsung Lions) and Song Seong-mun (San Diego Padres) are all currently active at the professional level.
