Seocho-gu in Seoul will hold a children's sweet potato digging event at a community garden in Naegok-dong (275-4 Yeomgok-dong) on Saturday, giving urban families a chance to enjoy a hands-on rural harvest activity together.

Co-hosted by the Naegok-dong Community Service Center and the Naegok-dong Residents' Autonomy Committee, the event aims to give city children a direct experience of harvesting crops while also sharing the bounty with neighbors in need.

Now in its 22nd year, the sweet potato digging event is one of Naegok-dong's signature community-led initiatives, made possible through the free lease of local farmland where residents tend the garden plots themselves and share in the harvest. Built on years of community participation, it has become a local tradition that combines family-oriented farm experiences with neighborly giving.

The event is open to all ages. Participating families pay a 1,000-won ($7) entry fee to dig sweet potatoes in the garden and take home one 5-kilogram box per family.

Alongside the digging, organizers have prepared a range of children's activities, including a sweet potato treasure hunt.

A portion of the harvested sweet potatoes will be donated to low-income households and welfare facilities in the area, adding a spirit of sharing to the occasion. Organizers hope the event will give families a joyful harvest experience while fostering warmth and connection with neighbors in need.

"I hope this event gives children a chance to learn the joy of harvesting from nature, and gives families a chance to create precious memories together," Seocho-gu District Mayor Jeon Seong-su said. "As autumn deepens, I invite you to come with your family, take in the beautiful autumn scenery of Naegok-dong, and enjoy the warm pleasure of sharing with your neighbors."
