Yeongyang-gun in North Gyeongsang Province held its 56th county sports festival at Yeongyang Public Stadium on Thursday.
Organized and hosted by the Yeongyang-gun Sports Council and sponsored by the county government, the event drew about 10,000 participants, including athletes from six towns and townships, an overseas residents' division, a workplace division, and local residents.
Competition was divided into seven events for the township division — the 100-meter dash, 400-meter relay, train race, ball-bouncing, group jump rope, group tug-of-war and arrow-toss — and three events for the senior division: hula hoop, rubber shoe throwing and arrow-toss.
After the competitions concluded, the county held a countywide rally urging the early inclusion of the North-South Axis 9 expressway in the government's third highway construction plan — a long-sought infrastructure project for the region.
Yeongyang-gun County Mayor Oh Do-chang said he hoped the festival, a cherished local tradition, would give residents worn out by daily life a chance to recharge, and help build momentum for the early approval of the North-South Axis 9 expressway.
