Uiseong-gun in North Gyeongsang Province announced Wednesday that it has submitted an application to the Ministry of Justice's open competition to select a site for a new correctional facility, formally launching its bid to host the institution.
The county is pursuing the bid to attract population inflows and stimulate economic activity through the facility's presence, while laying the groundwork for sustainable regional development in response to demographic shifts.
Uiseong-gun plans to include in its detailed proposal a thorough account of the candidate site's locational advantages, transportation accessibility and existing infrastructure, along with a vision for how the facility and the local community can grow together.
The county also intends to gather residents' opinions and work closely with relevant agencies as it navigates the selection process.
Should the facility be established, officials expect it to invigorate the local economy by drawing workers who settle in the area, attracting visitors and boosting consumer spending within the county.
The county said it will treat the application as a starting point and move forward with drafting and submitting a full proposal, while preparing to clearly demonstrate the candidate site's suitability and project feasibility ahead of evaluations and on-site inspections.
"I hope that securing this correctional facility will bring new vitality to our region by driving population growth and revitalizing the local economy," Uiseong County Mayor Choi Yu-cheol said. "We will listen carefully to residents and work closely with relevant agencies to do our utmost to bring in a correctional facility that can grow alongside our community."
