Gyodong, the Samcheok neighborhood home to Samcheok City Hall and the Samcheok campus of Kangwon National University, has been transformed into an artistically lit district through a nightscape improvement project.

The city installed galaxy-style decorative lighting along the stretch from the Gyodong residential area elevator to the Myeonggajokbal restaurant district as part of the Gyodong Residential Area Landscape Improvement Project.

The new lighting was designed to connect seamlessly with existing illuminated sections, with brightness levels calibrated to account for the surrounding light environment — including storefront signs and streetlamps.

Samcheok is also reviewing plans to extend the lighting network and link it to the newly completed section. If additional installations go ahead, the city expects the expanded coverage to create a cohesive nightscape while improving pedestrian convenience and offering residents and visitors more to see after dark. What began as scattered points of light has grown into connected lines, and a fully illuminated nighttime panorama is expected to follow before long.

Samcheok, which served as the capital of the ancient state of Siljikguk and long stood as a central hub along the Baekdudaegan mountain spine of the Korean Peninsula, is working step by step to restore its historic stature and raise the city's standing.
