A man in his 70s who allegedly killed his wife and fled has been arrested in North Jeolla Province.

The Jeonju Deokjin Police Station said Wednesday it had arrested a 71-year-old man, identified only as A, on murder charges and was questioning him.

According to police, a 71-year-old woman, identified as B, was found dead at an apartment complex in Deokjin-gu, Jeonju, at around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers responded after receiving a report that blood was found at the building entrance. B had died from stab wounds.

Police identified A as the prime suspect and launched a search, arresting him at around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday in Seocheon-gun, South Chungcheong Province. He is believed to have driven from Jeonju to Seocheon after the killing.

A had recently been issued a court order imposing stalking provisional measures Nos. 1 through 3 against him in connection with B.

Provisional measure No. 1 is a written warning against stalking behavior; No. 2 prohibits the subject from approaching within 100 meters of the victim and her family; and No. 3 bans contact through electronic communications, including phone calls, emails, text messages and KakaoTalk.

A is also believed to have physically assaulted B on multiple occasions before this incident.

Police believe B died on Tuesday and plan to request an autopsy from the National Forensic Service on Wednesday to determine the exact cause of death.
