Hwang Yu-min is setting her sights on a Rookie of the Year comeback across four LPGA Tour events in the Asian Swing, which gets underway this week.
Hwang tees off Thursday at the Buick LPGA Shanghai (purse: $3.2 million) at Seosan Golf Club (par 72) in Shanghai, China, alongside her chief rival Hara Erika of Japan. The two will also compete together in the remaining three legs of the four-week Asian Swing — the BMW Ladies Championship in South Korea, the Maybank Championship in Malaysia and the Toto Japan Classic in Japan — as they vie for the once-in-a-career LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year title.
This season's Rookie of the Year race has shaped up as a two-horse contest between Hwang and Hara. Hara currently leads with 489 points, 132 ahead of Hwang's 357. But with a win worth 150 points and a runner-up finish worth 80, a single victory could be enough to flip the standings.
Hwang earned her LPGA Tour card last year after winning the Lotte Championship on a sponsor's exemption. This season she has made 13 cuts in 20 starts, with her best finish a tie for fifth at the season opener, the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions. She led the Rookie of the Year standings for 17 events through the KPMG Women's PGA Championship before Hara overtook her.
Hara, 27, earned her LPGA Tour card through Q-School last year and brings a strong résumé from the Japan LPGA Tour, where she has won five times — including three majors — among them two Japan Women's Open titles. She has yet to win on the LPGA Tour this season but has made 12 cuts in 21 starts and recorded four top-10 finishes.
Both players will get a taste of home-course advantage at different points in the Asian Swing. For Hwang, next week's BMW Ladies Championship in Haenam, South Jeolla Province, is her most familiar venue and a prime opportunity to bounce back. The Toto Japan Classic in the fourth week, meanwhile, is squarely on Hara's home turf.
Fourteen Korean players have won the LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year award. Park Se-ri led the way in 1998, followed by Kim Mi-hyun (1999), Han Hee-won (2001), Ahn Si-hyun (2004), Lee Seon-hwa (2006), Shin Ji-yai (2009), Seo Hee-kyung (2011), Yoo So-yeon (2012), Kim Hyo-joo (2015), Jeon In-ji (2016), Park Sung-hyun (2017), Ko Jin-young (2018), Lee Jeong-eun (2019) and Ryu Hae-ran (2023). Hwang is chasing a 15th.
Hara, for her part, is chasing a third straight Rookie of the Year title for a Japanese player. Saigo Mao won the award in 2024 and Yamashita Miyu in 2025, giving Japan back-to-back honors. Both Saigo and Yamashita are former rivals of Hara's on the Japanese tour.
