Subsea cables loaded for Langkawi project
GL2030 deployed after major capacity upgrade
Long-distance, large-volume installation capability strengthened
Second overseas power project after Taiwan
Order backlog grows to 820 billion won
LS Marine Solution is pushing deeper into the overseas power grid market, launching a subsea cable installation project in Malaysia after completing work in Taiwan.
The company said Wednesday it is loading subsea cables for the Malaysia Langkawi project onto its cable-laying vessel GL2030 at Donghae port in Gangwon Province.
GL2030 will sail to Malaysia and complete the installation before the end of the year. The project was awarded to LS Cable & System by Malaysia's national utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad and will connect the mainland to Langkawi Island via a 132-kilovolt subsea cable.
This marks the first deployment of GL2030 since the vessel was expanded from a 4,000-ton to a 7,000-ton class. The increased loading capacity allows the ship to lay more than 100 kilometers of subsea cable in a single continuous run, strengthening the company's ability to handle long-distance, large-volume projects.
The Langkawi project is LS Marine Solution's second overseas power project, following work at Taiwan Power Company's offshore wind complex. The company recently won a contract to build the Sinan-Ui subsea cable system for 156.9 billion won, pushing its total order backlog to around 820 billion won — more than three times its 2025 annual sales of 244.2 billion won.
With GL2030 now in operation, all three of the company's vessels are active. The other two are deployed on subsea cable installation and maintenance projects in Taiwan and the Pacific region, respectively.
"We plan to accelerate our pursuit of large-scale projects at home and abroad," a company official said. "Projects including Sinan-Ui and the Taean offshore wind farm are set to proceed in sequence, and the West Coast HVDC energy highway project is also gaining momentum, which we expect will broaden our growth base."
