Stabbing attack at Gwol-dong shopping complex in Incheon
Eight victims hospitalized; one woman in cardiac arrest
Suspect had weapons tied to both hands during attack
A man went on a stabbing rampage at a shopping complex in Gwol-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon, on Tuesday, seriously wounding eight people who were rushed to hospital. Police arrested the suspect, a man in his 60s identified only as A, at the scene.
According to Incheon police and fire department officials, emergency calls reporting "a man causing mayhem with a knife" were received at around 1:49 p.m. Tuesday.
A wielded a fish knife and scissors against bystanders inside the complex. He had the weapons tied to both hands when he attacked diners on the second-floor restaurant level.
Eight people were seriously injured and taken to hospital. One woman in her 20s was in cardiac arrest, and two others were receiving treatment for stab wounds to the ribs and other areas.
A was wearing an electronic ankle monitor at the time of the attack, having previously served four years in prison on charges of attempted murder. The chief of the Incheon Namdong Police Station and a first-response team arrived at the scene, arrested A and seized the weapons. The area remains cordoned off.
Police, who have A in custody, plan to conduct a detailed investigation into the motive behind the attack.
