Ministry of Interior and Safety Minister Yun Ho-jung (right) and National Agricultural Cooperative Federation Chairman Kang Ho-dong demonstrate fire protection equipment Tuesday afternoon at a signing ceremony for the National Fire Safety Project MOU held at the federation's headquarters in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul.

The Ministry of Interior and Safety, the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation and the Korea Fire Insurance Association signed the agreement to expand smoke detector distribution so residents of aging housing can evacuate quickly in the event of a fire. Under the MOU, the federation will provide 100 million won ($74,900) annually for three years — 300 million won in total — and build a retail and sales network to make smoke detectors readily available at Hanaro Mart stores nationwide. The Korea Fire Insurance Association will handle safety inspections and education, while the Ministry of Interior and Safety will oversee pilot project implementation and the phased expansion of smoke detector distribution.
