Incheon city, Incheon Tourism Organization and Incheon International Airport Corp. launch 'K-Stopover' promotion
Paradise City, Songdo hotels among participating properties; 10,000-won transit card and overseas social media marketing also planned
Local authorities and public enterprises have joined forces to draw international transit passengers passing through Incheon into the city rather than letting them remain inside the airport.
Incheon Metropolitan City, the Incheon Tourism Organization and Incheon International Airport Corp. announced Tuesday they will jointly run the "K-Stopover tourism product promotion," offering substantial hotel subsidies to transit passengers at Incheon International Airport through December.
A stopover is a style of travel in which passengers linger at a transit point to explore the area on their way to a final destination. The initiative was designed to channel the millions of transit travelers using Incheon Airport away from the terminal and into the local economy, boosting the city's hospitality and stay-based tourism sectors.
According to the Incheon Tourism Organization, each transit passenger who uses the stopover tourism product will receive $100 in hotel subsidies. Incheon city and the Incheon Tourism Organization contribute $50, with Incheon International Airport Corp. covering the remaining $50.
A wide range of accommodations are linked to the promotion. Participating properties include Paradise City, Inspire Entertainment Resort — two of Yeongjongdo's flagship luxury integrated resorts — Ibis Styles Ambassador, Best Western Premier, Harbor Park Hotel and major hotels in the Songdo International City area. Visitors may choose whichever property suits their preferences.
The tour format also reflects current travel trends. Rather than a fixed-itinerary group tour, the program operates on a self-guided basis, allowing participants to move freely according to their own interests.
Transit passengers who wish to take part can visit the dedicated K-Stopover booking website, select one of six Incheon tourism itineraries and submit proof of their connecting flight.
Incheon International Airport Corp. will also give every participant a complimentary WOWPASS transit card worth 10,000 won ($7).
The organizers also plan to step up overseas marketing through social media channels in key target markets — China, Japan, the United States, Europe and Indonesia — in partnership with Korea Tourism Organization overseas offices.
Incheon Airport ranked first in the world for international passenger traffic in the first half of this year, handling about 38.39 million travelers, while transit passengers surged 18.1 percent year-on-year to roughly 4.24 million over the same period. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to convert growing transit demand into a local tourism asset.
"This is a meaningful project that organically connects Incheon Airport's world-class transit infrastructure with the city's tourism and hospitality industries," said Yoo Ji-sang, president of the Incheon Tourism Organization. "We will work to extend transit passengers' stays so that the economic benefits flow directly to local small businesses and the tourism sector."
