Crown Haitai Confectionery said it successfully held its 21st Changsinje performance at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Grand Theater in Seoul from Saturday through Monday.
Changsinje is the largest Korean traditional music performance hosted by a private company in South Korea. This year's program centered on "Sujecheon," a piece of royal court music that evolved from "Jeongeupsa," a Baekje folk song dating back 1,500 years. The festival has staged five consecutive years of performances reinterpreting Sujecheon through a contemporary lens.
The event opened with a chorus of 100 Crown Haitai employees performing to music by the Seoul Metropolitan Korean Traditional Music Orchestra and the Nakeum Korean Music Ensemble. The original Sujecheon — a wind ensemble piece once played as royal court ceremonial music — was rearranged for a Korean traditional orchestra and given lyrics that did not exist in the original.
The program also featured "Ilmu, Jeonpyehimun," a dance offering a visual interpretation of Sujecheon; "Jeonggagueum," a vocal piece mimicking the melodies and resonance of the piri and daegeum used in Sujecheon; "Obangjeongje," a newly created dance performed for the first time by 50 Crown Haitai employees; and "Sujecheon Dongnak," a samulnori piece. The evening concluded with "Sujecheon Wonhyong Hapju," an ensemble performance by the Yangju Pungnyu Music Society, made up of top-tier master musicians.
On Sunday, a special performance — "Yeongjae Haneumhoe Changsinje Special Performance" — was also held on the same stage, featuring winners of Crown Haitai's annual "Gather! Haneum Young Talent Competition," which the company organizes each year to discover promising Korean traditional music performers.
"Changsinje is a precious stage where Crown Haitai creates and shares joy with our customers through Korean traditional music," Crown Haitai Confectionery Chairman Yoon Young-dal said. "We will work to ensure that people around the world can appreciate the beauty of our traditional music together."
