Funds accumulated each time a player's tee shot landed in a designated charity zone
Donations to go to Busan Community Chest of Korea and Busan Golf Association
The city of Busan announced Monday that it received 30 million won ($22,400) in charity zone proceeds at the awards ceremony of the 2026 KLPGA HJ Shipbuilding & Construction Dongbu Construction Championship, held Sunday afternoon at A1 Country Club in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province.
Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-soo, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction co-CEOs Yoo Sang-cheol and Song Kyung-han, Dongbu Construction Vice Chairman Heo Sang-hee, Dongbu Construction CEO Yoo Jin-oh, KLPGA Senior Vice Chairwoman Kim Soon-hee, and some 20,000 spectators attended the donation ceremony. The funds were accumulated throughout the tournament each time a competing player's tee shot landed in a designated charity zone on a specific hole, with the organizers setting aside a fixed amount per qualifying shot.
The full donation will go toward supporting vulnerable residents and developing the next generation of sports talent. Of the total, 20 million won will be entrusted to the Busan Community Chest of Korea for welfare programs targeting underserved residents in the city, while the remaining 10 million won will go to the Busan Metropolitan City Golf Association to nurture young golfers.
The 2026 HJ Shipbuilding & Construction Dongbu Construction Championship, the only modified Stableford-format event on the KLPGA tour, was held over four days from Thursday through Sunday at A1 Country Club in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province. The tournament ran from 2021 through 2025 as the Dongbu Construction Korea Real Estate Investment & Trust Championship before HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, one of Busan's leading companies, joined as a co-title sponsor this year, adding a dimension of regional partnership and community contribution to the event.
"I am grateful to HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, Dongbu Construction and the KLPGA players for channeling the goodwill generated through sport to bring hope to marginalized neighbors and to plant dreams of the future in Busan's children," Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-soo said. "The donated funds will be used wisely — not only to provide welfare support, but also to serve as a stepping stone for Busan's promising young golfers as they strive to become world-class players."
