The Korea Automobile Research Institute announced Monday that it will partner with Italy's National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications Wireless Laboratory, known as WiLab, on advanced wireless communications technology for future mobility and connected vehicles.

Institute President Jin Jong-wook and WiLab Director Andrea Conti signed the MOU on future mobility research cooperation at WiLab's facility in Bologna, Italy, on Friday (local time).

WiLab is a wireless communications research institute affiliated with the National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications (CNIT), a nonprofit university consortium established in Italy in 1995. It conducts theoretical and applied wireless communications research as well as industry-academia collaborative R&D, with a particular focus on next-generation technologies including 6G, vehicle-to-everything communications, IoT and large-scale wireless networks.

Under the agreement, the two institutions plan to expand joint research and technology exchange in advanced wireless communications for future mobility and connected vehicles. Key areas of cooperation include wireless communications-based future mobility and connected vehicle technology, as well as joint research and exchange on next-generation wireless communications for connected vehicle and mobility applications.

The two sides will also jointly pursue R&D in future mobility using next-generation wireless technologies — including 6G, vehicle-to-everything communications, IoT and large-scale wireless networks — and work to identify international joint R&D projects.

"Next-generation wireless communications technologies such as 6G, vehicle-to-everything communications and IoT are core technologies that enhance the connectivity and safety of future mobility," Jin said. "Through cooperation with WiLab, which has specialized research capabilities in wireless communications, we will strengthen the technological competitiveness of the future mobility and connected vehicle industry and actively identify international joint projects to expand technology cooperation between Korea and Italy."

Meanwhile, the institute has been building partnerships with a range of organizations to bolster the competitiveness of the future mobility industry. It recently signed an MOU with the Korea Iron & Steel Association on establishing a cooperative framework in automotive steel and metal materials.
