Dalseo-gu in Daegu held its 18th Multicultural Hangul Writing Contest on Wednesday at Byeongam Seowon to mark the 580th Hangul Day.
Now in its 18th year, the contest was established to improve Korean language skills among foreign residents and multicultural families and to motivate continued learning.
About 100 marriage immigrants and foreign residents living in Dalseo-gu took part, competing in two categories — essay and illustrated poem.
A drawing event for Dalseo-gu elementary school students was also held alongside the contest.
"I hope this contest serves as an opportunity to communicate in hangul and deepen mutual understanding of each other's cultures," Dalseo-gu District Mayor Kim Yong-pan said. "We will continue to expand communication and exchange so that multicultural families can settle comfortably into our community."
