US President Donald Trump has floated the idea of renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean, following his earlier moves to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario.
According to The Washington Post, Trump made the remarks Saturday (local time) at a midterm election campaign rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, where he referenced the Gulf of America and Lake America — the names he had assigned to the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario, respectively. "We have a gulf and we have a beautiful lake," he said.
He then said: "Somebody said we need a river too. We need a river. We need an ocean. And we're going to call it 'Trump Ocean' or 'Ocean of the Americas' or something like that."
He added: "I think before I leave, we should have at least one ocean. And we need a beautiful river."
Trump appeared to be suggesting he could rename either the Atlantic or the Pacific. The Washington Post interpreted his remarks about putting his own name on an ocean as made in a joking tone.
Earlier, Trump signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America shortly after taking office in early 2025, triggering a diplomatic dispute with Mexico. The White House also barred an Associated Press journalist from official events after the wire service continued to use the name Gulf of Mexico. In August, Trump signed another executive order renaming Lake Ontario — which straddles the US-Canada border — to Lake America, provoking Canada.
The US president has the authority to change the names of bodies of water and other geographic features through executive power. Private companies that provide online map services have largely adopted the new names Trump has designated.
