The Yeongyang-gun Women's Organizations Council in North Gyeongsang Province carried out its third-quarter "Birthday Table for Seniors Living Alone" project Thursday, delivering carefully prepared birthday spreads to elderly residents celebrating their birthdays.
The project targets about 40 seniors aged 70 or older who either have no children or receive no care from their families, providing them with a birthday meal each quarter in which their birthday falls.
This quarter, eight seniors were served. The program has run continuously since 2015, marking its 11th year this year.
Starting early that morning, council members prepared generous birthday spreads — including seaweed soup, side dishes, rice cakes and fruit — and personally visited each senior's home to deliver the meals.
Council President Lee Ok-hwa thanked members who took part despite busy schedules. "We will continue working to spread a culture of sharing and build a warm community where we look out for one another," she said.
Yeongyang-gun County Chief Oh Do-chang said the county would keep a close eye on residents who might be left behind. "We will build a warm Yeongyang-gun where neighbors are a source of strength for each other," he said.
