SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won visited the former military airport site in Gwangju on Friday — the planned location of the Honam semiconductor cluster — and pledged to build as fast as possible once conditions allow.

On the scale of the planned semiconductor factory, Chey said it is currently planned at about two-thirds the size of the Yongin complex, adding that the project could grow larger if more land becomes available.

"Semiconductor demand is growing rapidly, so we need to accelerate the pace of supply," he said. "Once we are in a position to build, we will do so as quickly as possible. I cannot say exactly when that will be, but we will move as fast as we can."

Chey also said SK hynix would be willing to break ground ahead of schedule even if water and power infrastructure is delayed. "If we can just get the timing right, we will go in first," he said, adding that cutting construction costs is not a priority.

Chey made the remarks after touring the site in Seo-gu, Gwangju, which is slated to host the Honam semiconductor cluster.
