Daegu held a ceremony Thursday at the Dong-in-dong office situation room to celebrate athletes from the city who competed at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and present them with incentive payments.
Attendees included Lee Geon-hyeok (Daegu Public Facilities Management Corporation) in shooting, Seong Seung-min (Korea National Sport University) in modern pentathlon, Do Gyeong-dong in fencing, and Lee Won-jeong (Daegu City Hall professional team) in women's handball.
Lee Geon-hyeok won two gold medals at the Games, taking first place in both the individual and team rapid-fire pistol events.
Seong Seung-min claimed South Korea's first gold medal of the Games in the women's individual modern pentathlon and added a silver in the women's team event, finishing with two medals overall.
Do Gyeong-dong won gold in the men's sabre team event, while Lee Won-jeong also took gold with the women's handball team.
Ban Hyo-jin, a gold medalist at the Paris Olympics in air rifle, earned a silver in the mixed team 10-meter air rifle event and a bronze in the women's 10-meter air rifle.
Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho said he was "truly proud" of the athletes for raising the profile of both South Korea and Daegu at the Games. He added that he hoped they would again bring good news to citizens at the 107th National Sports Festival, set to be held on Jeju Island starting Oct. 16.
