Shinsegae Duty-Free announced Thursday that it has unveiled a media artwork titled "Annyeong on Hanji" in collaboration with artist Hong In-suk to mark Hangul Day.
The work renders the hangul word "annyeong" — meaning both "hello" and "goodbye" — through the brushstrokes of peony blossoms and a blue waterfall, and incorporates traditional auspicious motifs including pine trees, phoenixes, tigers and swallows. It was produced as part of the company's public culture project "K-Reflection Media Art Series," which reinterprets Korean literature and art through digital media.
The artwork will be on display on the media facade of the Iconic Zone on the 10th floor of Shinsegae Duty-Free's Myeong-dong store through Nov. 30, and on the exterior media facade of the Artium building in Samseong-dong through Wednesday.
Studio Artech participated in the production, reconstructing Hong's flat paintings in three-dimensional space with movement and light. Culture-tech firm Dosn is providing "nodnod.io," a QR-based multilingual AI exhibition guide service.
Meanwhile, Shinsegae Duty-Free's official Instagram channel is running a social media event inviting followers to share their own interpretation of "annyeong" in the comments. Winners selected by lottery will receive a special art postcard edition featuring Hong's "annyeong" work along with a Muji notebook.
